A skirt is the most important piece for establishing body proportion. It also serves as the backbone of every serious wardrobe. There are many types of skirts and it is expected that the numbers will increase as designers get new inspirations. Although the skirt types may increase, there are, however, several vital principles that come with every skirt:

1.      Every plus size woman must always have a skirt that is slim and is close to the body as much as the silhouette can bear. With this principle in mind, the best skirt for that category is a slim or straight skirt. Always remember that a skirt’s hemline is among the major horizontal lines on woman’s dressed body and a wide skirt with a wide hem makes you look shorter and wider as well. Simply put, find a skirt with a narrow hemline width to make you look slimmer and taller.

2.      While the width of the skirt at the hem is essential in balancing your curves and proportions, it is equally important to consider the skirt’s fabric. Always find fabrics that drape straight naturally. Bulky and stiff fabrics won’t do much for a skirt.

3.       Women with beautiful legs love to show off their legs. However, for plus size women with heavy tops, the skirt must not be wider than it is short or it will emphasize your heavy top. Although short skirt may be the trend, don’t always follow suit. Plus size women should keep their skirt just below the knee, and that is only if you have curvy legs. If you like a skirt with wide style lines such as pleated skirt and full skirt, keep the skirt long.

4.      Just like in dresses or shirts, vertical detailing also makes the skirt slimmer and longer, especially with vertical seams and button fronts. If you already got the height and wanted to cut the flow of the vertical details, find a skirt with pockets with horizontal openings.

Plus size women are most of the time tall women. You can pull-off a mid-length skirt nicely. Asymmetrically designed skirt will emphasize those long, shapely, legs. You should approach miniskirts with great care and if you really love it, in spite of the caution, wear flat shoes and a not-too-revealing top to balance your style.

If you are curvy in spite of your size, a pencil-cut skirt suits you just fine especially if you have a heavy bottom. Avoid pleats that start at the waist as it can look unflattering as it pulls open.

Boyish women can benefit from pencil skirt as well, as it gives the illusion of shapes and curves. Emphasize your hips with a denim skirt or circle or pleated plaid skirt to add natural and pretty curves to your body.

No matter what your body type is, there is always an ideal skirt for you. You just need to learn how to wear skirts that flatter your curves, emphasize your assets in a good way, and balance your body proportions nicely. The last thing that any woman would want is a skirt that overpowers her frame so choose wisely and carefully.
