Skirted garments for men are not too uncommon, as can be seen very well in history. After all, pants are invented to make horse riding easier and became a standard garb to protect working men from abrasion and fend off cold weather.

Men wearing skirts is still a hot issue. People are not yet convinced if it’s an old-world fashion trend or just cross-dressing. Even with some male models walking on catwalks with a male skirt and celebrities gracing the red carpet wearing kilts, a skirt is still not wholly accepted as a men garb.

Kilts

Men skirt is mostly referred to as kilts, which originated from Scottish Highlands. It is a traditional garment that is worn by Scottish pipe bands and Highland dancers.

Modern kilts predominantly exist in the United States and are highly modified Scottish kilts. The kilts are usually made from leather, denim, cotton, and corduroy and have been designed to suit all kinds of events including formal events, sports or outdoor recreations, and even workwear.

Hakama

Hakama is a skirted garment worn by Japanese samurai. Samurai hakama has no pantlegs like the more modern versions of the garment. Referred to as unbifurcated garments, a hakama is a proud tradition garment for warriors in many societies. Calling it a skirt is highly prohibited and seen as a grave insult for the wearer.

True men wear skirt

Most men are afraid that wearing skirt will identify them as homosexuals or cross dressers. However, with the emergence of modified and suitable Scottish kilts, men are slowly are discovering the practicality and comfort of wearing skirt. Often referred to as kilts, pareos, and sarong, skirts provide less movement restriction especially since it does not encumber men’s lower body areas. Some doctors even state that loose garments and non-restrictive clothing will allow men to live a healthier life.

Form follows function: that is the fundamental rule of design. Both men and women benefit from wearing loose garments and it’s functionality is not to be contested. Even runners and bikers can be seen wearing comfortable kilts. Some artists and woodworkers acknowledge the comfort and functionality a skirt has to offer.

Tips for wearing a man skirt

Confidence is vital for men to wear a skirt. You must exude confidence and reek of it to pull off a sarong or a kilt. If you do not have confidence in wearing a skirt, you will only look clumsy and ridiculous.

To add character, wear a man skirt made of tough materials like leather or denims. Find something masculine and that will asserts your virility, even if you are wearing a skirt.

Wear sarongs and kilts that come in earth colors: brown, green, black, deep or burnt orange and yellow is much preferred. Soft hues and bright colors are for women, as well as flower prints or tie-dye designs. Tribal and traditional designs are fitting for a kilt.

Wear fitted shirts or short-sleeve shirts when you are wearing kilts. Don’t wear shirts with loud prints or floral designs as it can take away the flare of your skirts.
